Lauren & Zack

Lauren and Zack’s wedding was actually perfect. The beach ceremony was followed by an elegant reception, which in turn was followed by a raucous party.

It was the 4th of July, and The Wychmere Beach Club provided a beautiful and lush backdrop, as usual.

The beach can be a difficult place to shoot, but the light on this day was soft and there was a slight haze. And Lauren and Zack are easy subjects anyway. Good looking couple, these two!

Thanks also to all the other folks who helped the day run smoothly. Go check them out for quality service!

Gorgeous flowers from The Cottage Garden, hair/makeup from Kimberly Richard, wedding cake from The Casual Gourmet, and DJ Danny Walsh kept the roof sufficiently raised.

Connie & Alex, Back Bay, Boston

Engagement portrait sessions are the best.

It’s good practice for the wedding. That’s a given. But there’s more. As a photographer, I feel that it is important to hang around for a while with a couple – to get to know each other and have some laughs and make some great pictures.

Connie and Alex understood and supported the process. It was a beautiful day. The sunlight was perfect. The city looked incredible. Vibrant colors all day in the park.

I strive to capture the good vibes of the day. Connie and Alex and I were having a really good time together and it shows in the images. And that’s pretty much right on.

Sara & Matt, Gooseberry Beach, Newport, RI

It doesn’t take much convincing to get me to go to Gooseberry Beach. Definitely the best beach in Newport, and the “surfer’s side” is an added bonus, though the waves were small on this day. There is a better shorebreak not far from Gooseberry, but it’s a secret…

Here are a few from Sara and Matt’s engagement session. Finding the secluded spot in the bushes above the dunes was key. It gave the impression of the two of them stealing away from the crowd to make-out a little.

Families, New England

Here is the most fun part about family portraits – the moment things deteriorate and the families start messing about together. That’s when I like to start shooting. That’s real.

Leaf fights break out all the time in families. That’s a decisive moment.

Of course, this set features the Roy family, among others. I shot their wedding, and then did some family pics. It’s a very convenient progression…

I like family portraits. Kind of a new thing for me. Contact me and we can set something up for the spring! Here are a few choice cuts from the fall.

Family Portraits – Greatest Hits

I don’t really think of myself as a family portrait photographer, per se, but I always have fun when I do them. And when I’m done I always tell myself that I should do this sort of thing more often…

Anyway, contact me if you want to set something up for your family. Everything is going to bloom in, like, two seconds, so now is a good time!

Here is a set of my favorites from the last few years.

Jessica & Matt, Cambridge, MA

Urban weddings are great. Cities present unique opportunities for me as a photographer. It’s a challenge to capture the energy and the vibe of the street – the traffic noise, summer humidity, smells, light. All of it. I have to admit I have a really good time trying…

You may remember Jessica and Matt from their most awesome Beacon Hill engagement shoot. Their friends and family converged upon (totally took over) the Hotel Marlowe for one of the more elegant weddings I’ve ever seen. The staff at the hotel was on point all night, as well. Great folks to work with.

Thanks, Jessica and Matt, for showing me such a good time!

Marla & Dan, Newport, RI

Marla and Dan’s was as perfect a Newport wedding as I’ve ever seen. Bright, beautiful sunshine casting rich, afternoon shadows along Thames Street. Wind blew in the harbor as we rode the water taxi through some considerable chop on the way to Regatta Place, which happens to be one of my new favorite venues. From the dockside ceremony to the tastefully detailed reception – it was hard to find a bad angle at this venue.

The first image in the set is my favorite. It was absolutely a planned shot – it’s a fairly common move in wedding photography, so why is it special? The setting isn’t dramatic. I liked the dock and the water and bit of boat tied up on the left. Technically, the image perhaps even has a bit to be desired, but I think there is more. This image feels like summer to me. The sunlight, the blues and whites, the wind on the water and in Marla’s hair, her back, her expression – all add to a feeling of openness, motion and fluidity. Of course, it’s subjective, but I wanted to give this pic a little more than “Sure was pretty in Newport that day”.

We also happened to catch the best parts of the sunset.

There were a lot of hip, preppie, good looking people at this wedding. I’m referring to Marla and Dan, of course. But their friends and family, too. All really fun to be around. They made my job very easy.

Michelle & Jason, Arlington, MA

I’ve been pals with Jay for a long time. We worked together in the early aughts and shared common interests in the music of Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane (as well as grooving at Phish shows). And like a pal, he supported whatever musical endeavor I was on to at the time. And Michelle puts up with a lot of Phish-nerdiness from Jay and the rest of us in the urban-crunchy crew. We really shouldn’t know who Chris Kuroda is, but we do.

So I was excited to do this for Jay and Michelle. It was spring and damp. We ventured outside to take advantage of the early blooming trees. The abundant white flowers provided a nice natural frame for many images in the set.

The ceremony was held in the Robbins Library, which featured really beautiful details (and a cool blue ceiling). The reception moved to the historic Whittemore Robbins House, which hummed with energy all night. And just when it was getting too hot inside, Michelle and Jay went out and served their guests dessert from the always tasty Cookie Monstah cookie truck.

Take a peek at the cheetah, Reba…
