Family Portraits – Greatest Hits

I don’t really think of myself as a family portrait photographer, per se, but I always have fun when I do them. And when I’m done I always tell myself that I should do this sort of thing more often…

Anyway, contact me if you want to set something up for your family. Everything is going to bloom in, like, two seconds, so now is a good time!

Here is a set of my favorites from the last few years.

Jessica & Matt, Cambridge, MA

Urban weddings are great. Cities present unique opportunities for me as a photographer. It’s a challenge to capture the energy and the vibe of the street – the traffic noise, summer humidity, smells, light. All of it. I have to admit I have a really good time trying…

You may remember Jessica and Matt from their most awesome Beacon Hill engagement shoot. Their friends and family converged upon (totally took over) the Hotel Marlowe for one of the more elegant weddings I’ve ever seen. The staff at the hotel was on point all night, as well. Great folks to work with.

Thanks, Jessica and Matt, for showing me such a good time!

Marla & Dan, Newport, RI

Marla and Dan’s was as perfect a Newport wedding as I’ve ever seen. Bright, beautiful sunshine casting rich, afternoon shadows along Thames Street. Wind blew in the harbor as we rode the water taxi through some considerable chop on the way to Regatta Place, which happens to be one of my new favorite venues. From the dockside ceremony to the tastefully detailed reception – it was hard to find a bad angle at this venue.

The first image in the set is my favorite. It was absolutely a planned shot – it’s a fairly common move in wedding photography, so why is it special? The setting isn’t dramatic. I liked the dock and the water and bit of boat tied up on the left. Technically, the image perhaps even has a bit to be desired, but I think there is more. This image feels like summer to me. The sunlight, the blues and whites, the wind on the water and in Marla’s hair, her back, her expression – all add to a feeling of openness, motion and fluidity. Of course, it’s subjective, but I wanted to give this pic a little more than “Sure was pretty in Newport that day”.

We also happened to catch the best parts of the sunset.

There were a lot of hip, preppie, good looking people at this wedding. I’m referring to Marla and Dan, of course. But their friends and family, too. All really fun to be around. They made my job very easy.

Michelle & Jason, Arlington, MA

I’ve been pals with Jay for a long time. We worked together in the early aughts and shared common interests in the music of Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane (as well as grooving at Phish shows). And like a pal, he supported whatever musical endeavor I was on to at the time. And Michelle puts up with a lot of Phish-nerdiness from Jay and the rest of us in the urban-crunchy crew. We really shouldn’t know who Chris Kuroda is, but we do.

So I was excited to do this for Jay and Michelle. It was spring and damp. We ventured outside to take advantage of the early blooming trees. The abundant white flowers provided a nice natural frame for many images in the set.

The ceremony was held in the Robbins Library, which featured really beautiful details (and a cool blue ceiling). The reception moved to the historic Whittemore Robbins House, which hummed with energy all night. And just when it was getting too hot inside, Michelle and Jay went out and served their guests dessert from the always tasty Cookie Monstah cookie truck.

Take a peek at the cheetah, Reba…

Hogwash ‘n Rhinestones

These images are from a product shoot I did for a store called Hogwash n’ Rhinestones. Thanks to the good folks at A.M.P. Studios for setting this one up. Great location, beautiful sunlight, good people – makes for a fun and productive day.

Gretchen & Todd, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA

Here are few of my favorites from Gretchen and Todd’s wedding a while back.

I recall some intense humidity, but as the sun began to weaken in strength we were able to relax, dig in, and make some great images. The first image in the set was captured during the ceremony. It’s Gretchen completely unposed and natural. These honest and unguarded moments are difficult to get, but that’s part of what makes them special.

This one almost slipped through the cracks.

Katie & Phil, Sakonnet Vineyard, Little Compton, RI

Still freezing, still snowing.  Scraped ice off the VDub windshield this morning.  I do like the winter, but I like summer more.

This engagement session with Katie and Phil took place at Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard in Little Compton, which happens to be one of the most beautiful places in New England. The folks at the vineyard were very accommodating.  We took over their tasting room for a while, and did one of my favorite images ever in their keg room. We also ran around the grounds and were able to really get in there amongst the grapes. I highly recommend a visit.  We had a really good time.

Katie and Phil are so easy to photograph (and to get along with).  I’m excited to continue on and shoot their wedding in the fall.  Thanks for a good time, folks.  See you both soon.

Jessica & Matt, Beacon Hill, Boston, MA

This post is a tribute to Beacon Hill – my favorite neighborhood in Boston.

I love making pictures in the city.  There is an almost palpable energy that, if caressed a bit, can really come through in the images.  And when a good looking, fun couple like Jessica and Matt are the subjects then that energy just flows naturally and makes the job easy.

We met in Beacon Hill for their engagement photo session. It’s beautiful there, and for me, romance abounds on it’s cobblestone side streets and brick-laden enclaves. It’s easy to fall in love in Beacon Hill – I know. And it’s a pleasure to photograph other couples there.  Warms the heart.

There are very few places in the world that are as special to me as Beacon Hill.

Marla and Dan in Newport, RI

Shoveled the VDub out of a snow bank this morning and figured I should post a few images from Marla and Dan’s engagement session last summer in Newport.  I miss the sun and the warm weather!

Marla and Dan are from Washington DC and we’d never met in person before this session. We’d only spoken on the phone.  I recall rolling down Thames Street and seeing this great looking, perfectly preppy couple walking toward where we had agreed to meet up.  I said to myself, “Jesus I hope that’s them!”

Put these two into the frame with Newport’s harbor in the background and my job becomes very easy…

Jen and Jay, Brooksby Farm, Peabody, MA

Damn I love a farm wedding.  So hip!

Endless possiblities for wedding portraits – surrounded by nature in bloom.  And beautiful light, if you hit it right.  We did that at Jen and Jay’s wedding at the Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm in Peabody, MA.  Great venue.  We walked around and took advantage of the orchards (the image of Jen looking back over her shoulder stands out for me) and climbed a little hill so the farm was spread out beneath us.  And then the sun began to set…golden, summer light, long shadows…just too good.

The reception in the barn was elegant and refined.  But Jen and Jay’s friends and family quickly turned it into more of an old fashioned hoe-down…we were, after all, in a barn.
